About the work:
Aint no mountain high enough, aint no valley low enough... You know the song, right? It was written about devotion of a different kind – but the lyrics seem to fit a mothers devotion just as well..
About the Manufactured Memories series & exhibition:
“Art is a way to fall in love with existence.”
In preparation for this show I decided to be adventurous and create as many new artworks as I could in the month of January and allow this show to form organically. I ordered many reproductions to paint on: mixing images from my found photo collection with personal family photos. After a busy holiday season focusing on client work it felt right to take the pressure off, loosen up and set aside time to focus on my creative practice! I've always loved bringing something beautiful into the world but the real magic for me is the way artmaking can ground me in the present moment. When I make artwork I am HERE. It’s why I choose to work intuitively- it forces my anxious brain to slow down and quiet it’s chatter as I focus on the details of composition, swooping shapes and colors, and feel the distinct demanding aura of each photograph. The aim was to focus on those moments of magic within my practice. Sometimes I felt pretty quickly when the collaboration was or wasn't working, other times it took seeing the images together on the wall later to know when images felt “right”. Interestingly enough partway through I forgot which photos were from my personal family collection. The images are now all very familiar: everyone here feels like family. Each image feels intimate. I work with captured memories and through my practice I manufacture new memories for us to share in experiencing these works.
