Quick Styling Tips for Real Spaces: “Knitting” a new element into a space.

In real life our spaces, just like ourselves, are always changing and evolving.

There are times in our lives where we dedicate time to a full room transformation. Other times maybe you fall in love with a unique item at a store or while shopping online and decide you just NEED to fit it into your space. Sometimes you shuffle items around to different rooms for a better fit! Sometimes Items live in places temporarily before moving to a more fitting space. Today’s tip is helpful in all of these scenarios and more. It is a great one to keep in mind as we create our spaces and as they grow and shift over time.

Today’s story revolves around a rug in my own space:

I’ve been keeping my eye out for a large rug within my budget for my living room for years.

In the meantime, I bought a very affordable yet cozy rug as a placeholder. It was too small for the space - but it kept the space from feeling echoey and uncomfortable while the search for the perfect rug sat in my peripheral vision.

Last month I finally found my rug for the living room!

That pink checkered rug that I bought was still in great shape: it needed a new home! I decided to shift the rug into our bedroom:

Now our bedroom is a fairly “finished” space. The room exists in wood tones, dusty purples, and black and white accents. The rug adds a coral pink to the mix!

Here’s where today’s tip comes in: “Knit” your elements into your space!

When I was in my freshman year of collage at Columbus College of Art & Design, my intro to oil painting instructor said something that has stuck with me ever since. She explained that for many paintings “knitting” a color all around the canvas can help an image feel cohesive and put together. while I don’t use this technique as much in my graphic artworks and illustrations - I use it all the time in my design work and in my own spaces!

For example: when I moved this rug into my bedroom my mind immediately turned to where I could add just a few more pops of that same pink to tie the space together!

I remembered some dried florals I had in my basement and began searching for a throw pillow in that same coral pink tone. Within days I found the perfect pillow while shopping with a friend at Target.

With these two additional elements the bedroom felt complete once again!

What I, and that wise professor, call “knitting” is a powerful yet simple tool that I hope will help you stay confident in your own power to create beautiful spaces to live, work, and thrive in!
